Description

The priests of the shrine of Elephantine worshipped a deity called Khnum, who was closely associated with the Nile and Egypt's fertile soil. His connection to the annual flooding of the Nile befitted his role as creator.
Khnum was a craftsman. unlike Memphis's Ptah who thought beings into existence, he created them from clay on his potter's wheel. He would fashion two models, one represented the new human body, the other the KA, or vital essence, which continued to exist after it's mortal twin had died.
A hymn to Khnum is found carved on the walls of his temple at Esna;
"He knotted the flow of blood to the bones,
Formed in his workshop as his handiwork,
So the breath of life is in everything"
